The Max Planck Society is an independent non-profit research organization dedicated to top level basic research at its own 80 Max Planck Institutes (MPIs). MPIs and research facilities conduct basic research in the sciences, arts and humanities. With approx. 850 staff, the MPI of Biochemistry is one of the largest MPIs. All MPIs have a lean local administration running the day to day business largely independently. The overall strategy of the MPS, legal and other issues of general importance are handled by the central services at the MPS headquarter.
