As project and liaison manager I ensure and coordinate the effective application and implementation of national or international research projects (H2020, BMWi, BMBF, IEA SHC Tasks, other). I advise our researchers on funding opportunities and administrative procedures and act as point of contact for funding agencies and our central administration.
Beyond these administrative tasks, I am actively involved in the strategic planning of international dissemination activities, research marketing and publishing. In a Task of the International Energy Agency’s Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, for example, I lead a subproject on “Information, dissemination and stakeholder involvement”. In another project called DanubeHEAT my job is to build a sustainable research network with Eastern European universities, SMEs and research institutions.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, one of the largest application-oriented research organizations in Europe. With its focus on solar energy conversion, our institute creates the technological foundations for supplying energy efficiently and on an environmentally sound basis in industrialized, threshold and developing countries.
With a staff of 1200, the Institute finances itself to roughly 85 % with contracts for applied research, development and high-technology services. Therefore, research administration is a crucial element in the value chain of our organization. Fraunhofer hosts centralized departments for research administration, financial and legal aspects for all institutes in its headquarter in Munich. An office in Brussels and an EU Network ensure proximity to the funding agencies and decision making bodies. The level of maturity of day-to-day project management varies from institute to institute. At Fraunhofer ISE, the role of an appointed project manager providing ‘hands-on support’ to research groups and departments is rather new and gaining in importance.
